NEWS & INFORMATION

CONCERT ATTIRE

Band and Chorus are both visual AND auditory experiences, and it's important for your child to help contribute towards the overall experience in both areas.   It's vital that you impress upon your child that ensemble performances are about blending in, rather than standing out.  As such, not only should your child strive to blend his or her instrument's voice to the group, but he or she should understand that concert attire should be worn correctly and with pride.

For all concerts at McGee, performers wear black and white unless specifically instructed otherwise.

BOYS   -  A plain white shirt over black pants over black socks and black shoes.   A tie of choice completes the ensemble.

GIRLS  -  A plain white top over black pants or a black skirt.  Your child must wear black nylons if she is wearing a skirt.   Please help your child to choose safe, comfortable shoes to complete the ensemble.

JINGLE ALL THE WAY

Thanks to all parents and staff members who made Jingle All The Way a success this year!   Any parent wishing to share digital images of a group's performance is asked to contact Mr. Cormack (828-0323 / VM 107).   Photos will be used on a space-available basis at the sole discretion of Mr. Cormack.

DOWNLOADS

The McGee Music Department now offers important forms and  copies of your child's music available online.  The downloads, in Adobe PDF format, are placed on this website under the "DOWNLOADS" section, and are arranged by ensemble.

The music downloads are intended to allow your child to practice at home even if the music is left back at school.   To help us avoid unintentional copyright infringement, the files are password protected (your child will have the password).  Additionally, to ensure that the music is used in the manner of a book, we ask that you destroy the music after your child is finished using it.

CONCERT ETIQUETTE

You, your child, and your guests will enjoy the concert experience far more if you are aware of certain universal expectations before  the concert.

FOR STUDENTS:

  • Try on your concert attire a day or two before the concert.  You are growing all the time!!  If something doesn't fit, trying it on early allows time to buy or borrow a suitable replacement.

  • No later than 1/2 hour before  performance time, you should be in the band room, completely dressed, with your instrument assembled.  You should plan on making any necessary lavatory visits before  this time.

  • If you need help with your instrument or an article of clothing, arrive even earlier.  This includes help with boys' ties.

  • Make sure that you have enough reeds, valve oil, and consumable supplies a day or two before  the concert.

  • Wear your concert attire as expected.  Don't make chaperones or Mr. DeGroff ask you to tuck in, button up, or cinch your tie.

  • When in the band room, keep voices down, and don't play unless instructed.  Mr. DeGroff and the chaperones should not have to raise their voices to ask you to be quiet or to tune.

  • Don't talk while on stage!  We're recording the concert!

FOR PARENTS:

  • Have your child try on concert attire a day or two before the concert.  This leaves time to buy or borrow appropriate replacement clothing.  It also helps you to make sure that your child plans on wearing appropriate attire.

  • Ask your child to present reeds, valve oil, drum sticks, and other consumable supplies to you for inspection a few days before the concert.  If reeds look old, stained, or gnawed on, they won't work correctly.   Fresh supplies help to make the concert a success.

  • Help your child to be in the band room, fully dressed, with instrument ready, no later than 1/2 hour before performance time.

  • Stress the importance of wearing concert attire appropriately and with pride.

  • Set all pagers, cell phones, and wireless telephony devices to silent  or vibrate  before entering the auditorium.   Don't conduct phone calls in the auditorium, even if you whisper.   It's rude.

  • Use flash photography sparingly.  It distracts your child and his or her peers.   The stage lighting is more than sufficient to allow excellent photos with most digital and film cameras.

  • Plan on staying for the full performance.   Encourage your child to stay with his or her peers until the concert is over.  Leaving early sends the wrong message to your child and his or her peers.

  • Vacate the auditorium and parking lot promptly if there is another concert!!
